Lures

Lures are a common type of fishing gear used to attract fish, especially as you move beyond the basics.

A lure is an artificial bait, usually made from metal, plastic, or rubber, and often includes one or more hooks. Instead of using live bait, a lure is designed to imitate something a fish would normally eat.

Different fish are attracted to different types of lures. Some respond to bright colors, others to movement or shine, and some prefer lures that closely resemble insects, worms, or small fish.

Because of this, choosing the right lure often depends on:

  • The type of fish you are targeting
  • The water conditions
  • The technique you are using

Common Types of Freshwater Lures

There are several types of lures commonly used in freshwater fishing:

Spinners and Spoons
These are metal lures that create flash and vibration in the water. They are effective for attracting fish from a distance.

Soft Plastics
These are flexible lures designed to look like worms, insects, or small fish. They are very versatile and widely used.

Jigs
Jigs are weighted lures that are moved up and down in the water. They are effective for targeting fish near the bottom.

Plugs
These are hard-bodied lures that mimic small fish. They are often used to create movement near the surface or just below it.

Keep It Simple

While lures can be very effective, they are not required when you are just starting out.

Live bait and simple setups often produce great results and are easier to use. As you gain experience, you can begin experimenting with different lures to see what works best in your area.
