Types of Fish
There are many different types of fish you can target when fly fishing.
The species you encounter will depend on whether you are fishing in freshwater or saltwater, but many anglers choose to focus on a few common and accessible species when starting out.
Freshwater Species for Fly Fishing
Some of the most common freshwater fish targeted with flies include:
- Brook trout
- Rainbow trout
- Brown trout
- Lake trout
- Steelhead
- Golden trout
- Largemouth bass
These fish are typically found in:
- Rivers and streams
- Lakes and ponds
Trout are the most well-known species for fly fishing, especially rainbow and brown trout. They are often found in cooler, moving water and feed heavily on insects, making them ideal for fly presentations.
Largemouth bass are another popular option. While they are not always thought of as traditional fly fishing targets, they respond well to flies and can be found in warmer, calmer waters.
A Simpler Way to Target These Fish
Traditional fly fishing uses specialized rods and casting techniques, but you can still target these same species using a much simpler setup.
By using a bubble filled with water, you can cast lightweight flies with a standard rod and reel.
This allows you to:
- Reach trout and bass without fly fishing gear
- Cover more water from shore
- Present flies naturally using wind or current
This method works especially well in:
- Lakes and ponds
- Slow-moving rivers
- Shoreline fishing situations
Keep It Simple
You do not need to limit yourself based on equipment.
Many of the same fish targeted with traditional fly fishing can be caught using a simple setup with a bubble and a fly.
Start with accessible species like trout or bass, focus on where they are feeding, and keep your approach simple.
