How to Grip a Fly Rod

Gripping a fly rod is slightly different than holding a standard fishing rod.

There is no single “correct” grip. Most anglers try a few different styles and settle on what feels the most comfortable and gives them the best control.

The grip you choose can also depend on:

  • The type of water you are fishing
  • The casting style you are using
  • Personal preference

There are three common grips used in fly fishing.

The Point Grip

The point grip is one of the easiest grips to learn and a good place to start.

To use this grip:

  • Hold the rod so it is roughly parallel to the ground
  • Extend your index finger along the top of the handle
  • Let your remaining fingers wrap naturally around the grip

This grip gives you a strong sense of direction and control.

Because your index finger is pointing forward, it helps guide the rod during both the forward and back cast. It also allows you to use your other fingers to manage the line more easily.

This grip works especially well in:

  • Smaller bodies of water
  • Situations where accuracy matters more than distance

Keep It Simple

The most important thing is comfort and control.

If a grip feels natural and allows you to cast smoothly, it is the right one for you. Do not overthink it.

Also keep in mind, if you are using a spinning rod with a bubble setup, you do not need to worry about fly rod grips at all. Your standard grip will work just fine.
