Fly Line Density
Fly line density refers to whether the line floats or sinks in the water.
This affects how deep your fly will travel and where it is presented in the water.
Types of Fly Line Density
There are several types of fly line based on how they behave in the water:
Floating Line
This line stays on the surface.
- Easiest for beginners
- Used when fish are feeding near the top
- Common for dry flies and shallow presentations
Sink Tip Line
The front portion sinks while the rest floats.
- Helps get your fly slightly below the surface
- Useful for streamers and nymphs
- Keeps better control of your line
Intermediate Line
This line sinks slowly throughout its length.
- Good for fishing just below the surface
- Works well in areas with weeds or structure
Sinking Line
This line sinks at a steady rate.
- Used to reach deeper water
- Sink speed varies depending on the line
Fast Sinking Line
This line sinks quickly.
- Used for deep water
- Often used in saltwater or when fish are holding deep
Choosing the Right Density
The main idea is simple:
- Use floating lines for shallow water
- Use sinking lines when fish are deeper
The deeper the fish, the more you need your line to sink.
Line Color
Fly lines come in different colors.
- Bright colors are easier to see above water
- Darker colors are less visible underwater
For floating lines, visibility is helpful so you can track your line.
For sinking lines, darker colors can be less noticeable to fish.
A Simpler Approach
If you are using a spinning rod with a bubble setup, you do not need to worry about fly line density.
You can control depth more simply by:
- Adjusting your leader length
- Adding or removing weight
- Letting your setup drift naturally
The bubble keeps your setup easy to manage while still allowing you to fish at different depths.
Keep It Simple
Fly line density is important for advanced fly fishing, but it is not required to start catching fish.
Focus on:
- Where the fish are in the water
- Adjusting your setup to reach them
- Keeping your approach simple
You can achieve all of this without needing specialized fly line.
