Surf Fishing Reels
When surf fishing, your reel is just as important as your rod.
Because you are fishing in saltwater, your reel needs to be able to handle harsh conditions.
Look for a reel that is:
- Corrosion-resistant
- Durable in saltwater environments
- Large enough to hold extra line
Surf fishing often requires longer casts, so having more line capacity is important.
Types of Surf Fishing Reels
There are two main types of reels used in surf fishing.
Spinning Reels
Spinning reels are the most common choice, especially for beginners.
- Fixed spool design
- Uses a bail to guide the line
- Easy to cast and control
These reels are simple to use and less likely to tangle, making them a great starting point.
Conventional Reels
Conventional reels, sometimes called baitcasting reels, are more advanced.
- Spool rotates during casting
- Requires more control and timing
- Can achieve longer casting distances
The downside is that they can be harder to use at first. If not handled properly, they can create tangles or “backlash.”
Choosing the Right Reel
If you are just getting started:
- A spinning reel is the best choice
If you have more experience and want maximum distance:
- A conventional reel may be worth exploring
Keep It Simple
You do not need complicated gear to start surf fishing.
A solid spinning reel that can handle saltwater will cover most situations and keep things easy while you learn.
Focus on comfort, reliability, and ease of use rather than trying to maximize distance right away.
